A lot of commercial and residential owners are increasing their properties’ safety by having fire sprinklers installed. A fire sprinkler can quickly and successfully stop a fire from spreading or even put it out completely. These sprinkler systems are often found in schools and other similar facilities. As smoke billows and the temperature gets increasingly hot, the alarm will sound off and water will begin coming from the sprinkler units secured to the ceilings. This water will continue as the fire gets smaller and easier to maintain.

Fire Sprinkler Maintenance

Maintaining a fire sprinkler is important if you wish for the system to work accordingly. There are several things you can do to guarantee that your sprinkler is ready for a fire. By keeping up with its maintenance, you can rest assured that your sprinkler system is fully prepared in case of an emergency, by spraying as soon as it detects heat or smoke.

Tips for Fire Sprinkler Maintenance

  • Replace sprinkler heads if they are accustomed to higher temperatures. Instead, opt for a sprinkler head that requires a higher level of heat detection before it functions.
  • Never stack boxes or anything nearby the sprinkler heads. Always make sure that they are free of any obstructions.
  • Check the sprinkler heads regularly for damage. You will also want to check the valves to assure that they are open. If the valves are closed, the sprinklers will not spray water in the midst of a fire.
  • Use the fire alarm system to lock all valves in the open position. Consider lockout devices so that the sprinklers are never found closed and useless when a fire emerges.

Always keep up with your fire sprinkler system. Whether you manually have to open and close valves or it can be done through the fire alarm system, always make sure that the valves are left open. The only time the sprinklers should be shut off is when you fear they might go off during something important or special, or when they are in jeopardy of getting hit or obstructed due to moving or remodeling.

Never assume all fire sprinklers are in working order and open in case of a fire. Although there are alarms that will sound off when a sprinkler is pushed into the closed position, you always want to assure the safety of all beings in the building.
